Big Group Trips to Sand Valley: Where 16 to 35 People Actually Sleep

8 min read

Short answer: for 16 or more people near Sand Valley Golf Resort, the move is two or three vacation homes in Rome or Nekoosa, WI instead of a block of hotel rooms. Our two biggest group homes are Archer Place (sleeps 17, about 2 minutes from Sand Valley) and Tomahawk Trail (sleeps 12, about 8 minutes away). Together they hold up to 29 people.

Eight guys and one house is easy. Twenty four people, six tee times a round, and somebody's boss coming along? That's a different trip. Here's how to house a big group out here, from the people who live here and run these homes.

Start with beds, not "sleeps 17"

Every listing has a max guest number. Here's how that number usually works, ours included: a king or queen bed counts as 2 people, and hideaway beds count too. That's fine for couples and families. It's not how a golf group sleeps.

So before you book, do the bed math. Ask one question: how many people in this group will share a bed? On a buddy trip the honest answer is usually zero. On a family reunion it's most of them. Company groups land in between, and whoever is paying usually wants their own room.

Here's what that looks like at our biggest house:

  • Archer Place on paper: sleeps 17.
  • Archer Place real beds: 2 kings, 2 twins, and 4 queens, plus hideaway beds.
  • Golfers who won't share: 8 people, each in their own bed.
  • Couples and families: it fills up toward 17.

Check the sleeping arrangements on each home's page, and if anything's unclear, ask us. Getting this wrong is how two VPs end up on a hideaway.

Our two group homes

Archer Place is our biggest home and the closest to the resort, about 2 minutes from Sand Valley on 9 private wooded acres.

  • 6 bedrooms and 6 full bathrooms. Nobody waits for a shower.
  • A 2,100 square foot private putting green.
  • Hot tub that seats 8, plus a game room with shuffleboard, pool table, darts, and arcade games.
  • Indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a big kitchen island, and dining space for the whole crew.
  • Parking for 6 vehicles.
  • Lake access with two private piers in season. The piers come out around the end of September.

Tomahawk Trail is our second largest, about 8 minutes from Sand Valley in the Lake Arrowhead area.

  • 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, sleeps 12.
  • Hot tub, game room, and screened patio.
  • Lake access, and it's close to the Lake Arrowhead golf courses if you want a second course on the trip.

When one house isn't enough: pair them

Past about 16 people, one house gets crowded no matter how big it is. Two or three homes gives everyone space at night, and you still meet up for breakfast and the hot tub.

Combinations that work (distances are straight line, so the drive is a little longer):

  • Archer Place + Tomahawk Trail: up to 29 guests, about 4 miles apart. Our two biggest group homes together.
  • Archer Place + Wildwood Retreat: up to 29 guests. Wildwood Retreat is about a mile from Archer, sleeps 12, and has a hot tub, infrared sauna, and game room.
  • Add a third home for 30+: Hidden on the 17th Hole sleeps 8 with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, right on the 17th hole of The Pines at Lake Arrowhead. Archer + Tomahawk + Hidden on the 17th holds up to 37.

Those are max guest numbers. Run the bed math before you lock it in.

Why two homes beats one giant one

Noise is the big one. Archer Place enforces quiet hours from 10 PM to 7 AM, with a fine for violations, and 30 people in one house are a lot harder to keep quiet than 15 in two. Splitting up also gives the 6 AM tee time crowd and the "one more hand of cards" crowd their own space. And if the group is splitting costs, it's easier to split by house.

Big group logistics nobody tells you about

Driving in. Most of our guests drive here, mostly from the Milwaukee area, Illinois, the Twin Cities, and Iowa. Rough drive times: Milwaukee 2.5 to 3 hours, the Chicago area 4 to 4.5 hours, the Twin Cities about 3.5 hours, and Iowa 3.5 to 6 hours depending on where you start.

Flying in. Central Wisconsin Airport in Mosinee is the closest, roughly an hour north. Madison, Appleton, and Green Bay all work too, at about two hours of driving. You can rent a car at any of them, and you'll want one.

Getting around. There's no reliable Uber or Lyft out here. Plan a driver for any night you're going out. Archer Place parks 6 vehicles, so carpool where you can.

Groceries. The Kwik Trip in Rome covers beer, ice, and basics. Rome Country Meats & Deli on Geneva Trail, right in Rome's town center, is the move for steaks, brats, and burgers for the grill. For the full grocery run, go to Wisconsin Rapids, about 15 to 20 minutes from our homes. The Walmart there is the easiest one stop shop for a big group. For bigger stores, it's Plover to the north or the Wisconsin Dells to the south. Do one big run on the way in.

Tee times. With 20 or more golfers you're booking five or six tee times per round in a row, so grab them the day your window opens. Lock the homes first, then the tee times. Flip that order and you end up with great tee times and nowhere close to sleep.

One organizer per house. They handle check in, the grocery run, and getting people to the car on time. One person herding 30 is how somebody misses a tee time.

Feeding a big group near Sand Valley

  • Breakfast before an early tee time: cook at the house. It's faster and keeps the group together. If you want to go out, Cal's Corner in Nekoosa does weekend breakfast, and Pancakes and Burgers is on Highway 13 heading toward Wisconsin Rapids.
  • The big group dinner: The Branding Iron Supper Club on Highway 13 in Wisconsin Rapids is a classic Wisconsin supper club and our pick for steaks.
  • Casual night out: Hoozel's at the Lakes in Rome has pizza, burgers, a huge patio, and live music.
  • Friday: Cal's Corner for fish fry. On Wednesdays, it's broasted chicken.
  • Night in: order pizza from Romano's or Sherwood Lodge and fire up the hot tub.
  • Rain day: Golden Ferret Golf Sims in the Town of Rome has three simulator bays, a full bar, pool, and darts.

Not everyone golfs? Still works

The same setup works for family reunions and company offsites. Archer Place has a laptop friendly workspace and a living room big enough to meet in. Non-golfers can rent a UTV, e-bike, or golf cart from Tri-Lakes Power Sports, get out on the lakes, or hit the trails at Dyracuse Park.
